Hey Kids, Let’s Help Out Entertainium!

Featured — By Alex on August 8, 2009 at 9:00 pm

While we’re currently in beta, Doug, Artie, and I have free range to make our own adjustments here and there, but what we’d really like to do is here some of your suggestions.  This site’s just an empty shell without you, so if there’s something you don’t like or something you’d like to see, why don’t you help out and make a suggestion below?

We could always use new ideas and fine tailoring Entertainium to just the way you want it would make this place better for everybody.

To make a comment below, you need to register first. Don’t worry, registration takes less than a minute…really!

Never mind! A little tinkering with the settings and now you aren’t required to register. You’re still required to fill in your name and e-mail address however.

We have more than two writers. We have three core writers and then we have other people contributing as well.

There will be a steady flow of content

Hey guys, I’m liking the site so far but I do have a few suggestions.

First of all; the layout. The top of the screen looks a little bland to me, the background just doesn’t give the site that zesty mint-freshness that it perhaps deserves. A minor complaint, I know, but these things just make the place look more interesting to your Average-Joe surfer.

Secondly perhaps some more opportunities for interaction by the reader, so possibly (and I know this has been done to death) but a weekly poll or something along the lines of a “Hot discussion” area (that’s for topical stories, not what you were just thinking you dirty boy) I feel the site just needs a bigger availability for user interaction.

Otherwise I’m loving the site, it looks nice, covers pretty much everything I’m interested in and – so far – has seen some top quality journalism.

    Keep up the good work!

Good suggestions Dang. We all agree that we hate the layout as much as you, but we all can’t agree on something we like so it remains for now.

As the heated discussion idea – I like that! We’re going to have to find an efficient polling system and maybe a way to make it more fun, but that’s a good idea.

      Thanks dude.

I’ll second Alex’s remark, these are good suggestions, but just to note:

This is a template design, we didn’t make it from scratch. So we realize things like the Log In is in a weird place and the background is bland, but its more having to do with “how the hell do we change it” rather than picking something we agree on.

As for user-interaction, we’ve got a feature that should be bi-weekly in the works. And we’ve been trying to figure out how to get forums started.

Oh, and possibly a login point at the top of the screen?

It may just be my own stupidity, but I can never remember where the button is with the current layout. o_O

Lol you didn’t see it cause it wasn’t there. If you hit reply your comment will appear under the comment, even if there was another one after it.

Aside: So background, better or worse so far? I still don’t like, so we’re trying to find a better one.

Yeah, I’m still not too hot on it either.

I think it’s due to the top section looking empty, perhaps after a login point was added it might look better. Or even add a catchy tagline underneath “Entertainium” to give it a better presentation.

Well I would say, and this is quite a small detail, but you would be surprised as to how much of a difference it makes, is SHADOWING. If you look at IGN and your site, in all honesty other than specific borders and dividers for sections and boxes within the site, it is specific shadowing for the boxes and the text that truly make most of the difference. I would add that the whole title section at the top could be used more efficiently. You have this massive blank space next and above the ENTERTANIUM title, that it is very distracting, so either increase the size of the title or decrease the size of the top. Either would be appropriate. Yet you may also be thinking of using that for advertisement area as other sites do as well. I don’t know what the intention is but that’s what I see.

I would also highly agree that a forum section would be great, and just anything that involves the user would be a great addition as well.

Oh also a suggestion is you have this Entertanium title with a very snazzy E, which whomever chose that, chose well. Yet I would add that you should incorporate that style more into the site. Such as when writing a review, you have the very first few words or first paragraph be white with the very first letter be that special “E” letter font, almost as though people were reading something out of a myth or an old fairytale book. As IGN has their very first paragraph for their reviews be bold this would be similar yet with just a step up in flair. Who knows though you may disagree and want to keep it simple, but that’s just a suggestion. If I think of anything else I’ll let you know.

Although as a base style and composition, it looks very SOLID!!! Great beginning.
